Three Ways To Work With Athletes
As a former professional athlete that's transitioned to an athlete entrepreneur helping athletes and brands, I get asked a lot how do you get in the door to work with athletes. Whether it's through real estate, wealth management, fashion, sports business, etc, people want to know how they can their foot in the door to work with athletes. The great thing about sports is that there's so much connection across different industries. There's nothing you can't tie back into sports in one way, shape, or form. Working with athletes specifically is a little bit different but the message remains the same.
When you break it down, there's truly only 3 ways you can work with athletes.
Help athletes make money
How are you helping your athlete client make money. Are you finding deals, negotiating contracts, eliminating liabilities, building his/her brand, developing their on field skills to produce more, keeping them healthy, etc... This is the most blatant way to get in front of athletes. Helping an athlete make money will get them to at the very least listen to what you have to say. From there it's up to you to produce.
Help athletes save time
Athletes are busy. Even when they aren't busy, they are busy. Don't expect to get all their time even the efficient, proactive ones. How can you make their life easier and save them time. Is it being their chief of staff or manager? Is it being their foundation coordinator? Is it being their chef so they don't have to worry about cooking or maybe a videographer to edit videos? How are you helping athletes be more efficient.
Protect athletes
As an athlete, you have to be very vigilant. Any mistake can cost you, your career, finances, and reputation. That's why athletes have people in place to protect their image, brand, wealth, etc. Whether it's a publicist, lawyer, accountant. Don't touch the quarterback! The athlete is the quarter back and they need to put people in place to act as their offensive line. That's an opportunity for you if you fit the mold.
I might have made it seem easier than it really is to work with athletes. It takes hard work, luck, and trust from the athlete. However if you have all the qualities plus whatever skills you bring to the table, you can help your athlete become an enterprise!!
I was an athlete that took a proactive approach to conquer these things myself while I was playing. Ultimately building my athlete sphere to cover the three most important things to build my enterprise. Make money, Save time, and Protect the business [me].
Now we do it for other athletes that are looking to take our C.E.O game plan and become an enterprise.
